PGA documentary producer’s lab
Los Angeles based member Anh Phan has been one of the producers selected to participate in the 2022 PGA Create Lab, with her feature length documentary project ‘New Wave’. The documentary centres around the teenage refugees in 1980s California who unknowingly pioneer an underground “Vietnamese New Wave” music scene so popular that it catalyzes the establishment of an influential diaspora entertainment industry.

“It was our friendship with Alexis that sparked this project; both of us as directors resonated with the complicated relationships she is navigating between her family and growing independence. All three of us felt that incorporating this personal storyline into an experimental dance film/documentary would be something special. We met and got to know her mother, Natasha, and are so privileged to have been given the trust and vulnerability you see on the screen. Prior to filming, we gave them a set of questions to ask each other, for which we filmed the audio but not the video. This exercise in itself was very intense and therapeutic for everyone involved. Although the situation between Alexis and her mother is somewhat unique, we know there are elements of it that will ring true for so many, the way it has with us.”
HUCK MAGAZINE FEATURE
Member Somayeh has been interviewed and featured in partnership with Squarespace x Huck magazine;
“It has been a struggle to find a unique voice that is authentic to me,” says filmmaker Somayeh Jafari. “For a very long time I was desperate to have this Iranian side of who I am come out in my work. But then something clicked around two or three years ago. I realised I didn’t have to force it. I realised I could simply tell the stories I wanted to tell, and by doing that my authentic voice would naturally emerge.”
